Gwen Takes Charge

“Well?” Gwen asked after a moment, startling him.
He looked up quickly. “You want me to—er—?”
“Not just you. I’ll help too, of course. We need to get her interested in other things. In life. You know, take her for walks, read to her, play with her.”
“That’s a wonderful idea,” Bennett said, admiring once again Gwen’s take-charge attitude. “You were always wonderful at that with the children.” He returned to his notes.
“Thank you,” Gwen said acidly, breaking in on his comparison of George Washington and Cincinnatus. “But I have to make dinner now, and I want you to get up out of that chair for once in your life and take an interest in your only grandchild, if that’s not too much to ask,” and she switched out, slamming the door a little behind her.

I was just joking about the canoe thing because you have a knack for pointing out little foibles in each of the characters, but you also are showing their strengths, like Gwen here and Chloe taking charge of her situation.

I agree with Icy. I've been a little dismissive of Gwen up until I started admiring her after this passage. Good life lesson.

Thanks for the input, T&I and Doug. It's interesting to see that different people have different takes on the characters. Dr. Weirsdo, for example, always thought Gwen was at best annoying.

Lula: Not really. He finds my mother annoying. But to be fair to her, he never knew her before she became psychotic.
Well, you left my weekend pretty open, but I think I am doing something you wouldn't: playing Nutcracker.
